Digital projection mapping for event backdrops

For events, projection mapping provides a more exciting experience for people by using visual stimulation. It is a versatile technology that can be used for a variety of events such as conferences, award shows, exhibitions and product launches. Using Modular Backdrops as the canvas is an effective way to create immersive and exciting experiences for your event audience.

Augmented 3D projection mapping explained

Augmented 3D Projection Mapping is a further form of projection mapping. In larger applications of more than one projector it will contain projection blending; but instead of just projecting an image on the canvas we use the canvas surface as a base for content we project onto it as visual trickery.

Basically, the object or structure being projected onto is static and we want the audience to realize it is a static physical object – but the videos and animated artwork being projected onto the canvas creates the illusion that the static object is moving, breaking or being manipulated in a way that is a figment of our optical imagination.

What is projection mapping?

Projection Mapping is a broad term that means to turn objects, often irregularly shaped, into a display surface for projection. These objects may be complex 3D industrial landscapes, such as buildings or any surface of any kind such as cars, cakes, clothes, wide format projection screens or corporate stage sets. In complicated structures projection mapping software is used to warp and wrap the projection onto the surface.

Is projection blending also projection mapping?

Projection Blending is a form of projection mapping in loose terms. When more than one projector is used to create an image that the eye perceives as one big unbroken image this is Projection Blending. We use Projection Blending in many standard Audio Visual setups today where wide format screens are used in corporate events.

How do you make 3D projection mapped content?

The highlights in most of our videos are mostly showing what we call a transition animation that ends or starts with an alpha background. By alpha background we mean the animation happens to leave behind an invisible background that we can place another graphic or video.

During a typical themed mapping event a large portion of the footage shown throughout the event is sourced stock footage while the remaining is either the transitions or loops we have produced with augmented 3D movement that loops during the opening and at breaks.

There are many stock video sites such as Envato, Pond5, Shutter Stock, Video Block – just look online for Stock Video or even Stock Photos. With some very cost-effective software such as After Effects, Final Cut and Adobe Premier you can turn these video into great background mapping footage for as little as $10 a segment.

You don’t necessarily need a professional content producer or editor for generic backgrounds and loops if you can find them as stock footage online. You will need a professional to make content with the panel designs and use them for mapping and especially 3D augmented mapping animations.

We have had our Stealth and Orb panels 3D scanned for precision models that we use to create our custom animations. Animators will use these models to recreate the actual modular backdrop wall that will be built for an event and apply physical motion to the panels of all types such as a panel bulging forward or a meteor breaking the wall apart.

What makes this process cost-effective is that often our animators have access to already created 3D models. When we are creating our concept ideas we often go onto sites such as Turbo Squid, CG Trader and 3Docean and type in our theme. On these sites, we not only get some great ideas for transition sequences but also can point our animators towards some cost-effective pre-created models to bring down content creation costs.

A history of projection mapping

The first public display of projection mapping was in 1969 when Disney used it for their Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland. The ride included numerous spooky optical illusions, including 5 singing busts known as the ‘Grim Grinning Ghosts’ who would appear to sing the theme tune thanks to the use of projection mapping.

Answers to all your Questions on Projection Mapping

Projection mapping allows us to turn every day surfaces, often irregularly shaped, into a display surface for image or video projection. They can be complex 3D industrial landscapes, such as a building or a car.

Projection mapping can be used for any event where you want to engage audiences with creative and engaging lighting and movement. Projection mapping content can be customised to tell a story, create a theme or to simply attract attention. Projection mapping is used for many different event purposes, such as dynamic corporate openings and stage backgrounds to stunning interactive awards presentations.

The cost of projection mapping varies depending on a variety of factors, including the size of the space, complexity of content messages to be created, and access to the venue along with the duration of the installation. Contact our experts today to discuss your goals!

Projection mapping content can either have a purpose, telling a story requiring custom video, simply be a static image or stunning video visual eye candy that creates an interesting backdrop for events like conferences or awards programs.

You can really use any static object for projection mapping. For corporate event backdrops, however, we recommend our Stealth Wall or Orb Wall as an ideal, cost-effective canvas for corporate events.

There are many different canvases that can be custom created or rented as stage sets for projection mapping. We recommend our Stealth Wall or Orb Wall panels. The matte white finish of each ABS plastic panel is perfect to reflect and absorb lighting or projection blending and have been meticulously measured and 3D scanned so that each panel is digitally replicated to become the ideal canvas for true spatial augmented reality 3D projection mapping. The advantage of hiring modular backdrops is that we have a number of intriguing off-the-shelf animations that could cost-effectively be repurposed for your event. This is much more inexpensive when compared to creating customized animations.

The best way to describe augmented projection mapping is ‘visual trickery’ or visual altered reality. It is projection mapping whereby but instead of just projecting an image on the surface we use the surface as a base and the content we project onto it as visual trickery. Basically, the object or structure being projected onto is static and we want you to realise it is a static real object – but the videos and animated artwork being displayed on the canvas creates the illusion that the static object is moving, breaking or being manipulated in a way that is a figment of our optical imagination.
The answer is yes, but it doesn’t have to be. With advances in cost-effective technology, using 3D projection mapping is now within for mid-level productions. It is now being utilised at many corporate events, conferences, exhibitions, productions and gala awards – especially where a traditional static backdrop just isn’t enough! Augmented projection mapping with optical visual trickery is the most complicated to produce and requires the actual canvas be available in a 3D digital model so that our animators can create custom content exactly representative to the physical Stealth modular wall canvas. We offer very cost-effective options of content creation and have an extensive library of off the shelf augmented content available and ready to be projection-mapped.

The 3D projection mapping process uses sophisticated software and video projectors to turn surfaces and physical objects into video displays.
